KONGOLAND

Kongoland is a companion work to TROPHIES OF TIME

By chance, shortly after my neighbor found the cigar box in his basement, I received an invitation to photograph a portrait series for a book project in the Republic of Congo. I did not hesitate to accept, as it had given me the opportunity to seek answers to my questions.

In 2019 and 2020, I moved to Central Africa and began photographing local people with my old medium format camera, in the style of August Sander. My journey in Congo embarked first from Brazzaville, followed by a small town north of the capital where I stayed for a while. I then explored further into diverse landscapes from lush rainforests of the north to the lowland Atlantic coastline in the southwest.

It was an intense time that brought me face to face with new cultural challenges, many of which took me by surprise.

Back in my studio, I began to study the developed negatives on the first contact prints.
Having the time to meditate on what is revealed on the portrays, I found myself studying their expressions; there was something very strong and intense beneath the gazes sat. I felt an ambivalent connection to my own work, making me reflect deeper. Bringing forth the question:

“Would the people have presented themselves differently in front of the camera if they had been photographed by a kindred soul?”

In January 2024, I set off back to the Congo. In my luggage were large-format photographs from the portrait series and painting supplies. Once there, I sought out artists as well as amateurs to discuss and reinterpret the works together.
